Brett N. Steenbarger "Enhancing Trader Performance"

“These are the three legs of the performance stool: (1) your talents and interests, (2) your trading style, and (3) markets and their personalities. The meshing of your qualities with your trading style will help determine your ability to trade that style with consistency and discipline. The meshing of your trading style and the features of markets will determine the degree to which you have a performance edge in the marketplace.

What kind of experience would be helpful in exploring market niches? If I were to recommend a few core experiences to start your paper trading and niche finding, these would be (1) fundamental, longer-term trading of individual stocks; (2) short-term momentum or countertrend trading of equity indices; (3) system trading of a basket of commodities; and (4) relationship trading between related trading instruments (stock sectors, fixed-income instruments of different duration, options of different expirations or strikes, etc.). Your fundamental trading would expose you to the process of researching stocks and industries and acting upon your judgment. Short-term index trading would provide you with experience in making rapid decisions based on shifting intraday supply and demand. System trading—even something as simple as trading moving-average crossovers on an end-of-day basis—would give you a sense for rule-based trading across multiple instruments. Relationship trading would introduce you to a different way of thinking about market movement and ways of profiting from it.

Despite this seemingly obvious truth, we see few traders attempt to learn through training. Instead, they approach trading in the amateur mode, only to lose money and court frustration.

An inexperienced trader will look at a chart and say, “I think we’re going higher.” He will then buy at the market with his maximum position size and see if the trade works out. Once it goes his way, he may or may not take profits. If it goes against him, he will get out when he is uncomfortable. The trades are neither planned nor systematic in their execution.

Shaken by a series of losses, we will abandon what had been successful and begin trading in a style that fits neither our personalities nor our skill sets. System traders may begin overriding their systems with discretionary judgments; short-term traders will second-guess their signals and hold longer-term positions. It is one thing to adjust our trading methods to changing market conditions; it is quite another to abandon our niche entirely and lurch from one method to another.

In short, there can be a world of difference between a profitable trade and a good trade, between an unprofitable trade and a bad trade.

Common Triggers
• Euphoria. Highly excited, positive feelings trigger overconfidence and overtrading.
• Anxiety. Intense fear triggers impulsive actions to relieve the state.
• Boredom. Lack of activity and feelings of emptiness trigger stimulation seeking activity to relieve the state.
• Sudden market movements. These become associated with particular emotional states and trigger fear, greed, overconfidence, or frustration.
• Large and/or sudden losses. These trigger feelings of loss/depression, frustration/anger, or fear, which, in turn, trigger coping responses to dampen these.
• Strings of wins or losses. These also trigger overconfidence and frustration and result in overtrading and distorted trade management.

Once you have identified a system that can be profitable over the course of time, then you have to develop a mindset in which you:
1. Focus on executing your system perfectly for each individual trade;
2. Focus on weekly or monthly gains and not the results of individual trades;
3. Track and quantify your performance mercilessly;
4. At the end of each day, each week, and month evaluate your actions and then commit to doing better tomorrow;
5. Stay positive in your thoughts and spoken words;
6. Stay away from negative influences that cause you to have doubts and fears about your ability as a trader;
7. Teach others to maximize their performance and, in so doing, maximize your own.”
