Investment Club to start equity research
Having the long-term “grand” goal of establishing a student-managed Investment fund, IUB Investment Club is becoming acquainted with Central and Eastern European (CEE) markets in hands-on terms. To get sound knowledge of equity analysis, the members of the club are starting to regularly publish equity research papers – the first one to be issued already in early April.
The idea is to analyze and compare a group of companies in the CEE region within a certain industrial sector, rather than to consider separate markets as units of analysis. This way, equity research team will identify most undervalued companies in a certain sector in the whole CEE region, thus pinpointing potentially attractive investment targets for asset managers and mutual funds operating in Europe and beyond. The main asset of the IUB Investment Club equity research team is its members – coming from the CEE countries, they eliminate language and cultural barriers frequently associated with analyzing newly emerging markets. Add energy and weekly IUB-style multi-hour Saturday training sessions, and you get a recipe for successful implementation of this ambitious equity research project.
Starting in April, two types of research papers will be offered to investors online and in print – the “short” monthly report will include comparative ratio analysis-based overview, while the “long” quarterly issue will extensively report on all companies’ health, competitive position and will apply advanced valuation techniques such as Discounted Cash Flow analysis.
The first report will focus on pharmaceutical companies in the Baltic countries, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Serbia and other emerging European markets. In the future, other sectors and more CEE countries will be covered.
This idea has been welcomed with interest by such financial companies as DWS Investments (Deutsche Bank Group), Morgan Stanley, Bremer Landesbank (Germany) and East Capital Management (Sweden), among others. Internship hiring has started as a consequence.
The first reports will be available online free of charge for the first few months. Yet understanding the need and importance of such research, Investment Club plans to later use this project as a fund-raising source for its to-be-established Investment fund.
Potential employers will find the list of equity researchers below. These people are driving the club and are ready to bring immediate value to equity research, asset management or brokerage houses. Please contact the club’s presidents (below) for recruiting questions.
